5 Essential Procedures to Have Done on Your AC Before Summer

Every year, air conditioner service calls increase by over one hundred percent in May–June. The main reason: air conditioners that have not been maintained throughout the year fail at exactly the moment they are most needed. Yet a few simple procedures carried out before the summer season can save you from this nightmare.

Why Is Seasonal AC Maintenance So Critical?

An AC that has not run, or has been running in heating mode throughout winter, faces different challenges when summer arrives. Leaves, dust, and insect nests that have accumulated on the outdoor unit clog the condenser; the moisture on the indoor unit creates conditions for mold growth. Summer maintenance resolves these issues before the season begins.

1. Clean the Outdoor Unit and Clear Its Surroundings

Dust, leaves, and organic debris that have accumulated on the outdoor unit over winter obstruct the condenser's airflow when summer arrives. Wash the outdoor unit with low-pressure hosing. Make sure there are no obstructions within at least 50 cm of the unit; shrubs, bicycles, or wooden covers significantly reduce condenser efficiency. Having this done by a technician prevents damage to the condenser fins.

2. Have the Refrigerant Gas (Freon) Checked

Refrigerant gas is not consumed in a closed system; however, it can slowly leak due to micro-cracks or loose fittings. Low gas pressure that went unnoticed during winter causes the AC to cool inadequately in summer and damages the compressor. A manifold pressure test can only be performed by licensed technicians.

3. Have Filters and Coils Cleaned and Treated

Dust and moisture that accumulated during winter may have formed biofilm and mold inside the indoor unit. Antibacterial treatment and coil cleaning carried out before the summer season both improve air quality and increase energy efficiency. Have this done not just as a filter wash but as a full technical maintenance service.

4. Have the Drainage Line Checked and Cleaned

Condensate water is discharged from the AC to the outside via a hose. Algae and blockages can form inside this line which remained idle during winter. A clogged drainage line causes water to drip from the indoor unit during the summer cooling season. During maintenance, the line is cleaned with compressed air or a special solvent.

5. Electrical Connections and Capacitor Check

Cold temperatures and moisture during winter can cause oxidation and loosening of electrical connections. The start capacitor is a critical component for starting the compressor and fan. A worn capacitor causes the AC not to start or to start very slowly. This check prevents unexpected faults in the middle of the summer season.

Don't Forget Before the Winter Season Either

The same list applies before the winter season too. In particular, the refrigerant gas balance for heating mode, heat pump efficiency check, and whether the crankcase heater of the outdoor unit is active should be checked. September–October maintenance keeps the AC safe and efficient throughout winter.
