Inverter vs. On-Off Air Conditioners: A 5-Year Cost Comparison

One of the most common questions when buying a new air conditioner is this: inverter units are more expensive — does it really make a difference? In this article we compare the two technologies in terms of their technical design, running cost and 5-year total cost of ownership (TCO).

The Core Difference: How the Compressor Operates

In an on-off (fixed-speed) air conditioner, the compressor either runs at full power or stops completely. It switches off once the set temperature is reached and starts again at full power when the temperature rises. This constant on-off cycle leads both to high energy consumption and to premature wear of the compressor.

In an inverter air conditioner, the compressor continuously varies its speed. Once the target temperature is reached, instead of shutting off completely it keeps running at a low speed. This keeps the temperature stable, avoids sudden energy spikes and extends the life of the compressor.

Energy Consumption Comparison

For two air conditioners of the same capacity and energy class, in a scenario of 8 hours of daily use: an on-off unit draws roughly 1,800–2,200 W, while an inverter unit delivers the same comfort at 1,100–1,400 W. The monthly difference is about 50–80 kWh — that is, around 150–250 TL of savings per month at Turkish tariffs (based on 2025 electricity prices).

Five-Year Total Cost Analysis

On-Off Air Conditioner (12,000 BTU)

  • Purchase price: ~8,000 TL
  • 5-year electricity cost (6 months of use per year): ~18,000 TL
  • 5-year maintenance + possible compressor repair: ~6,000 TL
  • 5-year TOTAL: ~32,000 TL

Inverter Air Conditioner (12,000 BTU, A++)

  • Purchase price: ~14,000 TL
  • 5-year electricity cost: ~11,000 TL
  • 5-year maintenance cost: ~4,000 TL
  • 5-year TOTAL: ~29,000 TL

The conclusion is clear: after five years, the inverter unit works out cheaper. Even though prices change from year to year, the ratio stays the same: inverter units cost more up front but are more economical in the long run.

Is an On-Off Air Conditioner Still Worth Choosing?

An on-off unit may be preferable for very short seasonal use (one or two months a year), when a tight budget makes minimizing the initial investment the priority, or in light, secondary spaces such as a storeroom or garage. However, whenever more than six hours of daily use is expected, choosing an inverter is always the more advantageous option.
